Summary:
"Revenge is worth its weight in gold.

When her father is murdered for a journal revealing the location of a hidden gold mine, eighteen-year-old Kate Thompson disguises herself as a boy and takes to the gritty plains looking for answers—and justice. What she finds are untrustworthy strangers, endless dust and heat, and a surprising band of allies, among them a young Apache girl and a pair of stubborn brothers who refuse to quit riding in her shadow. But as Kate gets closer to the secrets about her family, a startling truth becomes clear: some men will stop at nothing to get their hands on gold, and Kate’s quest for revenge may prove fatal."

My Thoughts:

Surprisingly I loved this. Finished it in just five hours, which is saying something because I normally take a day or two at most to finish a interesting novel. Though not a big fan of the Western genre, this book completely and thoroughly engaged me.

Kate Thompson is on the road to vengeance after a gang who killed her pa, hanged him and burned down their house when she is out in the field. The gang is called 'The Rose Riders' who kill anyone or anything in their path. After saving her meager belongings from the fire and burying her father she dons on boys riding cloth and sets after her pa's killers.

Kate's father leaves her a letter, which she saved from the fire. The letter reminding her that if anything were to happen to him, she should go to Abe in Wickenburg. When she reaches there, she finds out Abe has already died two years ago but Abe's son Jesse inform her that a letter was left to her. When she opens the letter she comes to realize that The Rose Riders killed her pa for something else entirely. They were after a gold mine which her father and mother had scouted and prospected. That is when she realizes that the Journal her father kept always near him hadn't burned down in the fire but they took it. She sets out after them but the Colton boys catch up to her stating they can go together half the way and then can part ways. Men being men, they don't hear much of her grumbling and tag along. They don't realize that Kate is actually a girl dressed up as a boy. Along the journey they decide that they will help her with gang but in return she will help them find the gold. The story is long and with a lots of twists always around the corner. Just when you think this is it, it's going to happen we are thrown into another curve ball.

I seriously liked the brothers, Jesse and will. They were an very nice addition to the story.

I liked that the author made the characters very genuine, easy to connect. Kate is your head strong girl ready to take on the world, Jesse the one who always looks after others. And Will another version of Kate but a little relaxed and don't give a crap about you kind of attitude.

                                             “Gold makes monsters of men.”

“For some reason, this is the moment I know I’m gonna be all right; that the hurt might never fade, and my heart might always long for a stubborn cowboy with squinty eyes, but I’ll make do. Sure as the sun will rise.”

It was such a fast paced storyline. It was action packed. Not your typical sweet western love story. Full of killings. Full of bullets.

Though the dialect may cause trouble for some, which it certainly did for me some time but hey you have to try something new once in a while.
